Teen Football Player Dies in Car Crash

LAKESIDE, CA – A teenager on his way to football practice was killed in a car accident Wednesday morning when the SUV in which he was riding hit a car that had crossed into oncoming traffic on westbound Interstate 8 near Lake Jennings Park Road, according to the Highway Patrol.

The boy’s family had yet to be told of his death, so his name wasn’t released.

Five others were taken to hospitals, some with serious injuries.

Highway Patrol Officer Brian Pennings said the crash occurred just after 7 a.m., when a man in his 20s driving about 75 mph to 80 mph on eastbound Interstate 8 lost control of his white Honda compact. The car spun out of control eastbound in the westbound lanes, Pennings said.

The teenager killed in a crash on Interstate 8 this morning has been identified as Joseph Rojas,
a 17-year-old senior at Mount Miguel High School, according to school officials.

Rojas, who was a member of the school’s varsity football team, was on his way to a team practice when he was killed in the crash on westbound I- 8 near Lake Jennings Park Road, according to the Highway Patrol. He was a passenger in an SUV that was hit by a car that crossed into oncoming traffic.
