San Diego State University Drug Bust Creates Shock Waves

Every college and university has some sort of ‘underworld’ drug culture. The college years are generally known as a time where experimentation takes place, but there are times when this period in someone’s life can carry significant consequences. Such appears to be the case for dozens of students at San Diego State University, who now face significant criminal penalties after an enormous drug bust took place on the campus.

The investigation, dubbed “Operation Sudden Fall,” began in reaction to the death of a student at SDSU in May of 2007 due to an overdose of cocaine. The SDSU police force collaborated with state and county authorities as well as the DEA to complete the operation, which culminated with the arrest of 75 SDSU students and several others.

Enforcement officials stated that there was an ‘open’ drug sale operation ongoing on campus, and the central entities involved in this ongoing process were fraternities at the school. In all, enforcement agents seized two kilograms of cocaine, 350 Ecstasy pills, marijuana, psychedelic mushrooms, hash oil, methamphetamine, illicit prescription drugs, several guns and at least $60,000 in cash.

The process of selling these substances was allegedly so open that one member of a fraternity in question sent out a mass text message stating that the fraternity to which he belonged would be out of town in Las Vegas for the weekend for a formal event, and that those ‘regular’ customers should ‘stock up’ on their usual supplied beforehand.

Initial appearances are beginning immediately, and as troubling as this situation is for many people, everyone who is charged with an offense or offenses related to this situation still has rights guaranteed by the Constitution. Anyone who faces potential charges should take immediate steps to protect those rights by contacting a criminal defense attorney as soon as possible to schedule an initial consultation.
