1/12/2010 SAN DIEGO — Nearly 500 people were jailed for driving under the influence in the San Diego area during a 10-day period ending the day after Christmas, authorities reported Monday.
Law enforcement personnel across the county made a total of 496 DUI arrests from Dec. 16 through Dec. 26, compared to 323 during the same period last year, according to officials taking part in a statewide anti-drunken-driving program called AVOID.

The California Highway Patrol, one of the coalition members, was busy over the long Christmas weekend. During a 78-hour period beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday, the agency made 67 DUI arrests in the San Diego region, as compared with 95 last year.
