Jose Canseco Held at Mexican Border for Illegal Drugs
Jose Canseco, a former major league baseball player was caught at the international border at San Ysidro this past Thursday. Canseco was trying to bring in a fertility drug that is illegal in the US without a prescription.
Canseco was received drug charges with a count of having a mislabeled drug for interstate commerce.
But his attorney, Greg Emerson, says that the mistake on the label was because the information on the bottle was originally in Spanish, not English.
If he is found guilty, he could be looking at a maximum of one year in prison and a fine of $1,000. Canseco appeared well dressed in court and did not saying anything except “thank you.”
He left the courthouse downtown with a flood of reporters. He did not speak to any of them and just waved them off. He has a preliminary hearing set for November 4th. At Tuesday’s appearance he did not enter a plea to the misdemeanor charge.
The drug he was trying to bring into the US was for restoring testosterone in people who use steroids. Immigration officials held Canseco for almost ten hours. It was after he agreed to let U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents search his home in LA that they let him go.
