Airborne, Not the Cure for the Common Cold?

Thousands have heard and even used the product called Airborne with its packaging that says, “Created by a School Teacher.” It has been advertising that the product is a reliever of cold symptoms. But the company can no longer tout this message.

On Tuesday, California Attorney General Jerry Brown along with 32 other state attorney generals announced a $7 million settlement with Airborne, Inc. This forces the company to stop advertising statements that are seriously misrepresenting facts about this dietary supplement and its relation to helping colds.

Brown stated that Airborne dramatically misrepresented its products as cold remedies without any scientific evidence to back up its claims. Under this agreement, the company will stop advertisements that suggest that its products are a cure for the common cold.”

In response Airborne, Inc. released this statement: “Airborne continues to be used and trusted by millions of Americans from all walks of life.”  The agreement announced today will have no impact on our products or on the ability of consumers to buy them, because it deals with language that had already been dropped from our advertising and labeling.  What hasn’t changed is the simple fact that the key ingredients in Airborne have been shown to help support the immune system. Airborne continues to be the number one selling product of its kind in America and we appreciate the loyalty of our customers.”

Browns states that the ingredients that Airborne claims help prevent cold really do not have any “discernable effect to prevent colds.”

Investigators also brought up the concern of the high levels of Vitamin A found in the Airborne products. The Airborne actually contains less Vitamin A then it did originally. If a consumer were to follow the directions of using Airborne the amount of Vitamin A the consumer would consume could cause potential health risks especially to children or pregnant women.
